Born in San Francisco, California, young DAVID WARFIELD (1866-1951) was bitten by the acting bug while a teenager working as an usher in the Bush Street Theatre. Absorbing performances night after night, he developed a gift for mimicry that audiences enjoyed. He made his first stage appearance in 1888 in "The Ticket-of-Leave Man." Two years later he was in NYC where he appeared at the Casino Theatre, then at Weber & Field's Music Hall.
In 1901, David Belasco starred him in the comedy, "The Auctioneer," which ran through several seasons (1,400 performances, to be exact). Mr. Warfield wisely decided to remain under Mr. Belasco's manage- ment, and was soon cast as one of his best known characters, Anton von Barwig in another popular comedy, "The Music Master," which ran from 1904 to 1907 (over 1,000 performances), leaving no doubt as to his lofty status as America's leading actor in comedy.
Mr. Warfield enjoyed a long and prosperous career and a comfortable retirement as one of the world's wealthiest entertainers. He died at the age of 84.
